Arabs and Jews together at a Moroccan restaurant–if that doesn’t help nurture the seeds of peace, then John Wallach’s organization will have to change its name.
Mr. Wallach, foreign editor of the Hearst newspapers, is the founder of Seeds of Peace, which is sponsoring a dinner-auction tomorrow with Ambassadors Itamar Rabinovich of Israel, Ahmed Maher El Sayed of Egypt and Fayez Tarawneh of Jordan.
The auction will feature a first edition of the “Diary of Anne Frank,” autographed photos of Egyptian presidents Anwar Sadat and Jamal Abdel Nasser; and autographs of Golda Meir and Moshe Dayan–two of Israel’s best-remembered leaders–and of Yasser Arafat, head of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Seeds of Peace sends Arab and Israeli children to a summer camp in Maine. This year’s program served 116 young people, many of whom gathered for reunions when they returned home.
“Anyone who thinks peace doesn’t have a chance in the Middle East just doesn’t know about the seeds we are planting,” said Mr. Wallach.
The auction is at the Marrakesh Restaurant, 617 New York Ave. NW. Tickets are $100. For more information, call 202/833-4558.
