MUMBAI | For the fourth consecutive year, Indian Seeds participated in the South Asia Habitat for Humanity Youth BUILD outside Mumbai on March 21.
This year, 30 Seed and Seeds of Peace supporters painted houses in a village called Bhopli.
“When we arrived, we were greeted by a miniature parade of village children who were dancing and banging drums to announce our arrival,” said Aanya, a 2014 Seed.
“It was somewhat like our welcome back at Camp, and this little reminder brought a smile to so many of our faces. Apart from that, it was heart-warming to witness their happiness, and it gave us the inspiration we needed to start work straight away, despite the intense heat.”
Habitat for Humanity builds and repairs houses all over the world using volunteer labor and donations. Families purchase these houses through no-profit, no-interest mortgage loans.
“The basic foundations for the homes were already laid down by professionals before us,” said Aanya. “All that was left to do was plaster the bricks and paint the exterior of the house. However, we were all deceived by our eyes. It wasn’t as easy as it seemed.”
“It was very tiring,” said Sumedha, a friend of a Seed. “But then after we were done painting the houses, the smile on the villagers’ face was just priceless. This was one of my best experiences of my life.”
Participation in the Youth BUILD was made possible by longtime Seeds of Peace supporter Chuck Oldanie and funding from Seminole Rotary, Largo Rotary and the Rotary Club of Seminole Lake.
