PORTLAND, MAINE | Ninety Maine Seeds kicked off their program year with a dialogue session held at the Portland Public Library on August 1.
The session, led by Camp Director Tim Wilson, was joined by three Maine Educators, and included the new 2015 Seeds as well as their older high school peers. The six-hour dialogue began with an evaluation of the summer Camp experience at camp and then transitioned into separate discussions on race and identity.
“The dialogue session gives the new campers their opportunity to see how they will now be a part of Maine Seeds of Peace,” said Wilson after the event.
After their two-week experience at camp, Maine Seeds participate in year-round programs around the community that enable them to develop strong relationships built on mutual trust, as well as the skills needed to engage others in their schools and communities.
Historically a homogeneous state, Maine has become home to a growing population of refugees and asylum seekers from Africa and Asia.
