MUMBAI | Thirty-five young people from schools across Mumbai participated in the Second Annual Interfaith Harmony Camp in Karjat from December 11-13.
Six Indian Seeds organized the camp in response to growing intolerance and a rise in political parties exploiting religious differences and fueling sectarian violence.
The program’s goals are to foster an appreciation for the diverse faiths found in Indian society and the common values found in each, help participants understand how religious polarization creates mistrust and fear, and examine critically the prejudices we hold about people who practice other religions.
The camp’s Hindu, Muslim, Jain, Buddhist, and Christian participants took part in dialogue sessions facilitated by Seeds.
“This camp really helped me understand what needs to be done,” said one camper. “I’d like to spread the knowledge about false beliefs that are assumed based on the actions of only a small group of people that affect the entire group.”
“I now feel compelled to bring more awareness about growing intolerance in our country,” said another participant.
