Seeds of Peace, the Otisfield camp that promotes tolerance and understanding among youth from around the world, will receive $30,000 as the beneficiary of this year's Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race.
Each year the race, held in Cape Elizabeth, designates a nonprofit organization to receive a substantial donation. Seeds of Peace stands to gain an additional $40,000 or more through other fund-raising opportunities and publicity. Peoples Heritage Bank, sponsor of the race, announced the choice Tuesday at Portland High School, during an event that included more than two dozen Maine high school students who have attended the camp.
The camp, which began as a way of bringing Palestinian and Israeli students together for three weeks, has grown to offer sessions for students in troubled areas all over the world. Three years ago, the camp began inviting students from Portland, and then from all over Maine.
