PORTLAND, MAINE | Seven Lewiston and South Portland high school students were honored this afternoon by the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine for their efforts to stand up for civil liberties at their respective schools.
Lewiston High School students were recognized for successfully fighting for the right to hang a “BlackLivesMatter” poster at school. One of the honorees is 18-year-old Kalgaal Issa.
“It’s just amazing how us four girls and many other students who were behind this with us,” she says. “It’s like, you can do many things with just getting out there and making things heard. And questioning authority is not always a bad thing, especially if you want to create change in your community or school.”
South Portland High School students were recognized for convincing faculty to approve a new morning announcement that lets students know their right to not say the Pledge of Allegiance.
