Students living in the United States and United Kingdom take part in our Middle East and South Asia dialogue programs at the Seeds of Peace Camp, offering them an incredible opportunity to learn about these conflicts and regions firsthand.
Our program begins with a three-week experience at the Seeds of Peace Camp in Maine. Youth from the United States and United Kingdom live in bunks and engage in dialogue with their peers. The program is designed to spur personal and interpersonal change by first transforming perceptions and values at the individual level, and then building trust, respect, and empathy between people.
American and UK Seeds are participants in the program in every sense, from bunk life to activities, their identities, relationships, and opinions concerning the Middle East and South Asia are an important part of the conversation. American and British campers provide their own perspectives and experiences during discussions of history, identity, and politics that take place during daily dialogue sessions. By so doing, they play an important role in creating an atmosphere conducive to dialogue and conflict transformation.
Following Camp, year-round activities explore the role of the US and UK in those conflicts, while continuing to build their leadership skills and ability to effect economic, social, and political change in their local communities. Examples of such programming include workshops, seminars, lectures, and trainings. Another hallmark of post-Camp programming is Bayti.
Bayti (“my home” in Hebrew and Arabic) is a two-week summer trip through Israel and the West Bank for American Seeds that enables them to experience the region through the eyes of Israelis and Palestinians rather than through the lens of a tourist. Local Seeds of Peace graduates help design each facet of the program that gives participants a rare glimpse into everyday life in Palestinian and Israeli schools, communities, and governments.
