MUMBAI | On May 11, nine Indian Seeds along with four adults participated in Habitat for Humanity’s day-long Asian Youth Build held in Karjat, a city just outside of Mumbai.
The Seeds joined nearly 5,000 young volunteers from across India, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand in laying bricks, mixing cement and wielding hammers as part of an effort to provide shelter for over 500 families. In India, over 500 youth volunteers came together to repair 45 homes across four states.
“I am happy that my friends joined me for Habitat Youth Build,” said Zeenia, a 2009 Seed and J.B. Petit High School student. “It is great to see young people in India concerned about the well-being of others.”
Working alongside volunteers from Bloomberg L.P., the Seeds and staff together painted one house in its entirety and laid bricks for a second.
The participation of Seeds in the Youth Build was made possible through a generous donation from the Rotary Club, through the urging of long-time Seeds of Peace supporter Chuck Oldanie.
